Bluewater Sites for All-Day Kindergarten

The first phase of the provincial full day learning program for kindergarten students begins next September at selected schools throughout Ontario. Bluewater District School Board submitted a list of schools for the Ministry's consideration late in 2009. The criteria for participation in phase one of the Extended Day component of the Early Learning program included available space, impact on local childcare and local need for the program. The approved sites have been announced by the Ministry of Education.

In Bluewater they are:

  • Arran-Tara Elementary School, Tara
  • Bayview Public School, Owen Sound
  • Beavercrest Community School, Markdale
  • G.C. Huston Public School, Southampton
  • Hillcrest Elementary School, Owen Sound
  • Kincardine Township-Tiverton Public School, Kincardine
  • Lucknow Central Public School, Lucknow
  • Mildmay-Carrick Central School, Mildmay
  • Sullivan Community School, Desboro

The Extended Day component of the Early Learning Program is the start of an implementation that will continue until the 2015-2016 school year. Full-day learning for four and five year olds is part of the province's plan to build a well-educated workforce by preparing them for school and for life. Teachers and early childhood educators will work together to help children learn during the regular school day. Schools will also offer programs before and after regular schools hours, led by early childhood educators. Participation is optional, but it's expected that 35 thousand students across the province will be enrolled in full day kindergarten next year.
